Obituary of Joane Mercuri Butera
Joane Mercuri Butera, 95, of Hatfield, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Monday, June 13, 2022, at her residence. She was the beloved wife of the late Angelo Butera who passed away in 2010.
Born on September 3, 1926, in Platania, Calabria, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Pietro and Pasqualina Mercuri.
She found joy in her family, watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their sports games, recitals, and holiday pageants. An avid seamstress, she demonstrated her love by hemming everything from pants to prom dresses to wedding attire. She made dresses for girls around the world impacted by poverty or natural disasters, and she worked alongside her daughter to make more than 5,000 masks to give away to those who needed them at the start of COVID. She delighted in preparing meals for others, and she often took in those in need of a place to stay.
She was an avid Villanova Basketball and Philadelphia sports fan who thoroughly enjoyed their victories and offered some tough love in their losses. She loved talking to family and friends about her teams.
Joane cared deeply about the accomplishments of her family, and she’d proudly display pictures of accomplishments, news stories, and certificates on her refrigerator and share the stories about them with friends.
She is survived by her children, Ned Butera and his wife, Kathy, of Lewes, DE, RoseMary Gerhart and her husband Robert, of Hatfield, PA, and Angelo Butera and his wife, Lisa, of Graterford, PA, ten grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, her brother-in-law Michael Butera, and many nieces and nephews she loved dearly.
In addition to her husband Angelo, she was predeceased by a son, Peter F. Butera, a great-grandson, Adam Peter Afflerbach, and her four siblings.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Mass at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at St. Eleanor Catholic Church, 647 Locust Street, Collegeville, PA, 19426, where friends and relatives will greet the family from 10-10:45 AM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to St. Vincent dePaul/SMG, 1601 Derstine Road; Hatfield, PA 19440.
