Richard Slater, III

Obituary of Richard Michael Slater, III

Richard Michael Slater III, 66, of Skippack, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2021, at Einstein Montgomery Medical Center.

Born May 11, 1955, in Norristown, PA, he was the husband of Judith Ann (Kalinowski) Slater and the son of the late Richard Malvin and Jane Elizabeth (Temple) Slater. Mr. Slater is survived by his children, Abigail of Arlington, VA and Callison of Richmond, VA; his step-sons, Christopher of Schwenksville and Josef of Horsham; and his brother, Jim of New York City.

Mr. Slater earned his Bachelor’s degree in History at Bucknell University in 1977. As a self-employed opera singer, Mr. Slater was a member of many choirs over the course of several decades. He was a bass soloist at Paoli Presbyterian Church and previously sang with the Men and Boys’ choir at the Washington National Cathedral, the Washington Chorus, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. In 1992, Mr. Slater won the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, hosted by the Opera Company of Philadelphia. A talented football player and track-and-field athlete, Mr. Slater was also inducted into the Norristown Area School District Hall of Fame and the Hall of Champions.

Richard was a caring, talented, and passionate man. He loved singing, history, and learning, but nothing was more important to him than his family, with whom he shared most of these passions. He sang with his wife and daughter, discussed movies and art with his son, and spent his whole life learning about his ancestors and their stories. Everyone who knew Richard speaks of his kind, intelligent, goofy demeanor. He was a bright light wherever he went and in whatever he did. He will be missed desperately by all who knew and loved him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at 6:30 PM on Friday, December 17, 2021 at the R.L. Williams, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. (3440 Skippack Pike), where friends may greet the family from 5-6:30 PM. The family requests that all guests wear masks and that they have been vaccinated.
