Obituary of Sean A. Hughes

Sean A. Hughes, 51, of Harleysville, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Cooper University Medical Center. He was the husband of Kristiane (Rezza) Hughes to whom he was married for over 22 years.

Born June 22, 1970 in Lower Merion, PA, he was the son of Eileen (Mason) and the late John A. Hughes (who preceded Sean in death by 14 hours).

Sean was a dedicated educator but also a life-long learner, he attended Cardinal O'Hara High School, LaSalle University (undergrad), Widener University (Masters), and was working on currently completing his Doctorate at Widener University.

While at LaSalle, Sean was part of the Sigma Phi Lambda fraternity; Students Government Association; Men’s Crew, and the History Association.

As a LaSalle University Alumni, Sean was active on the Alumni Board: Alpha Epsilon and Hall of Athletes Committees, School of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board; Education Department Advisory Board; Adjunct in the Graduate Education Program and Summer Enrichment Program.

His notable career as an educator began at St. John Newman High School before joining Lower Merion High School in 1998 as an Assistant Athletic Director and Teacher. He quickly took the reigns as Athletic Director and then Assistant Principal at LM from 2002-2005 until he became their Principal in 2008. Sean was loved and respected by thousands of students who have passed through the halls of Lower Merion and he loved and respected them right back. He was regularly greeted in the halls as, “Huuuuuuughes.” He encouraged individuality and prioritized the student’s voices. The door to his office was always open, and his message of “character counts” is entrenched in the culture of his legacy.

Sean was also served as President of the Central Athletic League. He was part of the Sea Isle City Beach Patrol for many years. He was an avid runner – and completed 20 years of the Broad Street Run. He loved landscaping and renovating his old farmhouse, enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake, summers in St. Michaels, Maryland, anything with fascinating history (but mostly WWII), great beer, and was very “passionate” about neatness.

Sean was an amazing father. Watching his children grow, learn new things, and compete brought him endless pride and pure joy. He loved coaching his children in baseball and softball – as a coach and “sideline” coach. He would go to the ends of the earth to help his kids follow their dreams.

Sean was patient and kind. He was never quick to anger, rather he would take a step back from a challenge to understand the right, calculated move forward. He loved his wife beyond words. He was her lifeline, pit-crew, and rock during her battle with breast cancer in 2017. True partners, they loved to travel together, enjoy good food and great drinks. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his children, Jack, Nolan, and Katherine Hughes; his siblings, Patrick Hughes (Cara), Megan Santry, and Timothy Hughes, brothers in law, Frank Rezza (Kelly) and Anthony Rezza, Jr. (Megan); nine beautiful nieces and one amazing nephew, and many extended family and loving friends.
