Obituary of Philippa J. Broadhurst
Philippa J. “Pippa” Broadhurst, age 82, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. She was the beloved wife of Geoffrey W. Broadhurst with whom she shared over 59 years of marriage. Pippa and Geoff met on November, 27 1959 at Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Born March 29, 1939, in Ottawa, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Frances Isabel (Hunt) Lyons and Phillip Douglas Lyons.
After graduating from Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa, and then Queen’s University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts, she began what would turn out to be a lifelong passion of world traveling. Pippa traveled in Europe for months with her dear friend, Jean. Gone for over 10 months, Geoff eventually persuaded her to come home. She became a high school English teacher in Oakville, Ontario. Pippa and Geoff moved to Irvington, NY in 1963 and Pippa became a GED/high school equivalency teacher at the General Motors assembly plant in Tarrytown, NY. After taking time off to raise Sue and Jeff, she followed her love of world culture and travel and became a travel agent. After several years, Pippa started her own travel agency called Sleepy Hollow Travel and kept that successful for 21 years.
Pippa was genuinely interested in all people and world cultures. We believe she visited over half of all the countries in the world. She was an avid tennis player, curler, reader and skier. Pippa and Geoff were integral members of Ardsley Curling Club for 50 years. They were also members of the Irvington Presbyterian Church (IPC) for over 50 years. Pippa’s cremated remains will be interned at IPC in the spring of 2022. While residing at Meadowood Senior Living, Pippa really enjoyed making new friends, swimming and playing shuffleboard.
Pippa was a lover of all animals, especially dogs. In her early years, Pippa showed dogs and won many competitions. She bred, trained and showed beagles and springer spaniels. Her love of dogs was lifelong and for more than a decade she volunteered for Puppies Behind Bars. This organization raises pups in prisons to be service animals, and teaches prisoners about unconditional love, something that Pippa exemplified!
In addition to her husband, Geoff, she is survived by her children, Sue Broadhurst and Jeff Broadhurst and his partner Brenda Babbitt; grandchildren, Quin and Bree Hopkins, and Sophia, Ella and Zane Broadhurst; sister, Elizabeth “Sally” Cleary and her husband, Ross; and brother-in-law, Ted Byfield. She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Byfield.
A local memorial service will be held on November 11 at 3 pm in the auditorium at Meadowood Senior Living. A memorial service will also be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Irvington Presbyterian Church, 25 N. Broadway, Irvington, NY 10533. A reception in the church parlor will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Pippa’s name may be made to Puppies Behind Bars or any animal rescue organization of your choice.
