Robert F. McGinley, Sr., 86, a long-time resident of Skippack, PA, passed away at home on Monday, April 19, 2021, after an illness. He and his wife, Jeanette (Estock) McGinley, observed their 66th wedding anniversary on November 27th of last year.
Mr. McGinley "Bob" was born July 7, 1934, in West Point, PA, the son of the late Jacob and Loretta (Dunkelberger) McGinley. He was a 1952 graduate of Ambler High School and attended Ursinus College.
Bob started his long career with the Bell system as a lineman and then a cable splicer. He was promoted to marketing where his aptitude scoring and no-nonsense work ethic took him to sales consulting on the Dupont account in Wilmington, DE, and finally as the supervising service center foreman in West Chester, PA and Doylestown, PA. He was also on the AT&T national task force for cable televison pole contracts since the late 1960's.
Bob used to say, "When the brass ring comes around, you have to be ready to grab it." When the opportunity to start a cable television compay came up, he left the security of the Bell system and in 1972 fouded Cablevision of PA in Norristown, PA. He built several cable systems in the area under Cablesvision, and then constructed many more franchises as HomeVue Cable. Bob was a cable TV pioneer and was well-known locally and nationally for building a quality system. He did what he said he was going to do. He also founded a consulting company doing contract installations and sales compaigns for various cable televison companies along the east coast. He later sold the franchises, bought and sold several other ventures and was working on yet another venture before his illness.
Bob hated to be idle and served as a member of the Perkiomen Valley School Board during the Graterford high school construction, and was a member of the Skippack Lions Club.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his hunting camp in Potter County, where he built some prime tree stands that only he would dare to climb. He loved snowmobiling and until a few years ago, would snowmobile in Canada, Yellowstone and New England with friends and the Perkiomen Snow Goers.
Bob had a private pilot's license and spent many hours flying airplanes. He was IFR and Twin rated with thousands of hours logged. It was common for them to fly into Butter Valley Airport for a quick lunch or dinner or Tangier Island in a twin engine Beechcraft.
Bob was fond of time spent with family and friends in Ocean City, NJ and the mountains of Potter County and the Poconos.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Richard McGinley and his wife, Janice, of Hilltown, PA, Glen McGinley and his wife, Diane, of Collegeville, PA, and Robert F.
