Obituary of John Hendrick Durham

John Hendrick Durham, 83, passed away Monday, March 1, 2021, at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Carol A. (Rohrbach) Durham.

Born August 7, 1937, in Amsterdam, Holland he was the son of the late Jules and Lulu (Kirschoff) Durham. He was raised in Queens, New York, and earned his BA in Economics from Queens College in 1959. Upon graduating Queens College, John entered the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton Graduate School of Business, where he earned his MBA in Finance in 1961. He went on to earn his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1968.

He began his lifelong career at Delaware Management Company, an investment advisory firm in Philadelphia, and retired thirty years later as Chairman, CEO, and controlling stockholder.  He spent his retirement serving and supporting community organizations close to his heart. John is a past Trustee of Germantown Academy, The Queens College Foundation, The Martin Luther School, The Lutheran Home at Germantown, The Pension Board of the United Church of Christ, and past Chairman and Trustee of Abington Memorial Hospital and Lansdale Hospital. 

For John, the center of his life was his family.  He delighted in times spent with grandchildren and meeting his great-grandchildren.  He loved to plan family trips and capture the memories through photography.  His meticulous organization of these family photos and sharing them at family gatherings was a great source of joy for him and a gift to all those who shared in these life moments.  His leadership, wisdom, and intellect were valued during his professional life as well as a constant source of guidance for his family.    

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Christine Bogrette and her husband, James; John Paul Durham and his wife, Michelle; his brother Kenneth Durham; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
