Betty Jean Rothenberger

Obituary of Betty Jean Rothenberger

Betty Jean Rothenberger, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 14, 2020, at her home in Worcester, PA. She was the wife of the late Maynard G. Rothenberger who passed away in 2013. They were married 63 years at the time of his passing.

Born November 26, 1929, in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late J. Frank and Maude (Markley) Urwiler. She was a 1946 graduate of Lansdale High School, where she met her high school sweetheart who eventually became her husband. She graduated with her R.N. degree from Frankford Hospital School of Nursing and worked many years as a registered nurse.  Once married, she lived on the family farm where they raised their 5 children and started Merrymead Farm Market in 1971.  Betty Jean, affectionally known as Mrs. “R” to many, authored the published book ‘Merry The Great Pumpkin’.  The story has been read to thousands of children to their delight and hers!  She also wrote the script for the Live Nativity presented on the farm for over 30 years.

Betty Jean was an active and founding member of Cornerstone Church of Skippack. She was a former member of Central Schwenkfelder Church where she was a Christian Endeavor leader, directed several programs, plays and participated actively in the Ladies Aid Society. She led women’s Bible studies at both churches. Along with her husband, Betty Jean was a member of the International Flying Farmers, where she served as Pennsylvania Queen and then International Duchess. She used her gifts of organization and planning fun times and fellowship for the many organizations she was involved in.  Words were her friend. She loved writing personal notes, good conversation, playing Scrabble, reading novels and studying the scriptures. II Timothy 2:15 was a favorite verse.  She loved her family, her friends and her Lord and Savior. She was a giver and enjoyed helping others.

Surviving are three daughters, Linda K. Homa and her husband, Jack, of Spring Mount, PA, Carol A. Snyder of Worcester, PA, and Donna R. Quigley and her husband Stephen, of Worcester, PA; and two sons, Scott M. Rothenberger and his wife, Mary, Worcester, PA, and Mark D. Rothenberger of Lexington, SC. She is also survived by four siblings, Joan Kelly of Hartsville, SC, Lee Urwiler of Swarthmore, PA, Pam Hagerty of Willow Grove, PA and Penny Lindsay of Perkiomenville, PA; 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
