Obituary of A. Jane Hawks
A Jane (Rourke) Hawks, 94, of Harleysville, passed away Saturday, February 29, 2020, at Peter Becker Community where she has resided for the past three years.
Born April 30, 1925, in North Wales she was the daughter of the late Dr. William Edgar and Edith (McClellan) Rourke.
Jane grew up in North Wales, the youngest of 4 and the only girl. Her father had a dental practice, was the Burgess of North Wales, and was very active in local and state politics. When her father died in 1937 Jane and her mother moved to Fort Washington. After graduating from Ambler High School Jane attended Temple business school on a scholarship. She then began her lifelong career as a secretary beginning with Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia. She married, had 2 children and divorced. From there she worked for several large companies in the western suburbs as an executive secretary, McNeil Labs, Merck, and Sperry Univac, where she retired at age 60. After some time off she found it too boring to be at home and temped for 10 more years before retiring for good. She supported herself and her 2 children as a single parent from the time they were quite young buying her own home in 1961 in Roslyn, PA. After her children were grown she moved to Schwenksville, PA and then to Limerick, PA. She was savy with money and investing, all self-taught. At the age of 70, Jane took an art class at the Harleysville Senior Center discovering for the first time her talent as an artist. She produced many oil paintings over the years and even won first prize in the only art contest she ever entered. She volunteered for many years at the Schwenksville Library. She loved animals, reading, the theater, bridge, and travel, but the time spent with family was her greatest joy.
She is survived by her two children, Melissa Motz and her husband, Doug Jones of Harleysville, Jeffrey Hawks and his wife, Christine, of Green Lane; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Hawks, Steven Hawks, Sean Hawks, Alissa Motz & Daniel Motz; and six great-grandchildren, Delaney, Cayden, Avery, Eliot, Sean & Remi Hawks.
She was predeceased by her siblings, George Rourke, W. Edgar Rourke, and John Rourke; and her granddaughter, Sydney Haber.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at 11 AM on Friday, March 6 at the R. L.
