Obituary of Patrick Wallace Bilder
Patrick Wallace Bilder, 43, formerly of Lederach, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2020, in Tampa, Florida.
Born May 27, 1976, in Livingston, NJ, he was the son of Martin “Chuck” and Glenda (Wallace) Bilder. Patrick was a graduate of Malvern Preparatory School, class of 1994. After high school, Pat graduated from the College of the Holy Cross earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. He continued his education and earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University in 2005.
Patrick spent most of his life doing academic research at Vanderbilt, Louisiana State University, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His doctoral research focused on the structural analysis of an enzyme and was published in the scientific journal, Biochemistry. A representation of this protein appeared on the cover. His research produced many first-author papers including a tuberculosis investigation at Albert Einstein that recently played a crucial role in a large NIH grant award for his former laboratory. He also endeavored teaching forensics and chemistry as an assistant professor at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. Before planning a return to the laboratory, he undertook a personal mathematical project to determine the probability of locating prime numbers for use in technical advancement.
Patrick’s many interests included fly fishing, photography, running, and Australian Rules Football, also known as “Footy”. He was originally recruited into footy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while he was a staff researcher in biochemistry at LSU. Thereafter, he played with the New York City team before engaging with the St. Petersburg team in Florida, now in the process of reforming as the Tampa Bay Tiger Sharks. He became one of the pivots in helping the growth of this new team. His life ended in an automobile accident after a full day of practice.
