Obituary of Kenneth Gunning Lyle
Kenneth Gunning Lyle, the youngest son in a family of ten, was born April 9, 1924, in West Manayunk in Lower Merion Township. Ken was the son of James and Edith Lentz Lyle and in addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Stewart, Charles, Arthur, Elma, Joseph, Earl, Jane, Evelyn and Jean.
Kenneth joined the United States Army at age 18 and was part of the 462 Artillery, 503 Regimental Combat Team, who famously parachuted on Corregidor and in the South Pacific during World War II. Ken was awarded two Purple Hearts and 5 Bronze Stars.
After he returned home, he married Emilie Hurler, and spent almost 72 years with the love of his life. Ken and Emmy built their family home in Cedars PA in 1959 and it became a haven for family and friends hosting legendary picnics and family gatherings.
Ken had two sons who sadly predeceased him, Kenneth Gunning Jr. and John William Lyle. In addition to his wife Emmy, he is also survived by his two grandsons, Kenneth Gunning Lyle III and Cody John Lyle.
Kenneth was a lifelong member of the 503 Regimental Combat Team and Shiloh-MacCalla Lodge No.558 F.&A.M., traveling the world with both organizations. He spent his career as a proud member of The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 542.
He will be missed by all who knew him. The family appreciates the loving care provided by the Southeastern Veterans Center and Asera Care hospice.
Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at the R.L. Williams Jr. Funeral Home Inc, 3440 Skippack Pike, Cedars PA 19423, where the family will greet guests from 10:00 – 10:45. Interment will take place at Wentz’s U.C.C. Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Kenneth’s name may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
