Obituary of Henry Dettra

J. Henry "Hank" Dettra, 94, of Harleysville PA, passed away from congestive heart failure at Peter Becker Community, Harleysville, PA, December 29th, 2019.

"Hank" was born in Kulpsville, PA, January 15th, 1925, graduating from Lansdale High School, class of 1943. Following High School, he joined the US Navy, and served as a SeaBee from 1943-1946, serving as a baker, stationed in the Philippines.

In 1985, he was married to Norma B. Dettra (deceased), and previously married to Myrtle R. Beideman.

He enjoyed being active in his church, both at Christ Lutheran, PA, and in his retirement years, at Messiah Lutheran, FL.  As a younger man, he played church softball, was on the bowling league and sang in the church choir as well as being a member of the United Schwenkfelder Choir for many years until retiring to FL.  In Florida, he took part in many of yearly holiday dioramas put on by the congregation.

Other interests included camping, fishing and traveling. He always seemed to have a boat of some kind, having one in PA as well as FL.  One of his favorite vacation spots for fishing was Canada which he visited with friends nearly every year for many, many years.  He and his wife, Norma, also took trips to Europe, finding themselves in Paris, France, on 9/11, thankfully getting home without too much trouble.

After his wife's passing, he moved back to PA, residing at Peter Becker Community until his death.  While there he made many friends and was often found playing pinochle, or other games, which he enjoyed very much.

Hank has one daughter Jane Dettra of Perkiomenville, PA, and three stepchildren, David Buehler (deceased) and his wife Judy of Warren, PA, Beverly Buehler of Plano TX, and Paul Buehler and his wife Maria of Phoenixville, PA, as well as three grandsons, Jake Goldblatt, Benjamin Goldblatt, and Ian Buehler of Phoenixville, PA.
