Obituary of Margaret Raleigh Wheeler
On Friday, September 6, 2019, Margaret Raleigh Wheeler passed away from complications of Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 79.
Margaret was born on June 18, 1940 in Bangor, ME to Stephen and Rosemary (Thomas) Raleigh. She grew up in State College, PA. She received a BS in math from Penn State University in 1962, an MA in theology from the University of San Francisco in 1996, and a Doctorate in Ministry from Washington Theological University at the age of 72 in 2012. She married Thomas Francis Wheeler, Jr on April 4, 1964, and raised three children with him: Tom, Mike, and Marcy.
Margaret flourished in three successful careers in her life: a lifetime of mothering her children, 25 years working for International Business Machines as a programmer and project manager, and 10 years in spiritual direction with the Jesuits. For the last decade, Margaret has enjoyed a busy retirement at Meadowood retirement community in Lansdale, PA, earning a third degree, staying active in the Parkinson’s community, and helping fellow residents with their craft projects and their spiritual development. Maggie, as she was known later in life, loved to travel, and was fortunate enough to enjoy trips to the Baltics, to Palestine and Assisi, Rome multiple times, and a road trip across the US in the last few years despite the challenges of PD. She also managed to see two of her three grandkids graduate from high school in the last two years. She spent the last weeks of her life besting her children in Scrabble and cribbage.
She passed peacefully in her own bed.
Margaret was preceded in death by her spouse, her parents, and her brothers, James, and Stephen Raleigh. She is survived by her three children, her sister Rosemary Mazza, her three grandchildren, Jack, Aidan, and Finn Wheeler, her in-laws, Elaine and Jerry DeWan and Fran Raleigh, and nine nieces and nephews.
