Obituary of The Rev. William P. Welther

The Rev. William P. Welther, 73, formerly of Centre Square, PA, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2018, at home in Upper Gwynedd Township, PA. He and his wife, Barbara C. (Share) Welther, observed their 51st wedding anniversary on August 5th of this year.

 

Born May 10, 1945, in McKees Rocks, PA, he was the son of the late Rev. William J. and Ruth (Hazel) Welther, and was a graduate of Rochester High School. He graduated from Wittenberg University and later received his Master of Divinity degree from Gettysburg Seminary.

 

Rev. Welther served as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Blue Bell, PA from 1976 until his retirement in 2012. He had formerly served as pastor at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Chester Springs. PA from 1971 until 1976. He sang in numerous choirs throughout his lifetime and played both the organ and the piano. An avid reader, he was a wordsmith and a talented Scrabble player. He spoke German fluently, enjoyed traveling and appreciated a good glass of wine.

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jeremy T. Welther and his wife, Melissa, of Basking Ridge, NJ; a daughter, Betsy A. Norton and her husband, Benjamin, of Upper Gwynedd Twp.; a sister, Carol Berkhammer and her husband, Edward, of Johnstown, PA; and four grandchildren, Liam, Christopher, Madelyn and Lucas.

 

Relatives will receive friends for his viewing from 5-8PM on Friday, December 21, 2018, at the R. L. Williams, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 3440 Skippack Pike at Cedars Road, Skippack, PA, and from 9:30-10:45AM on Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, 1802 Skippack Pike, Blue Bell, PA, 19422. The funeral service will then begin promptly at 11AM at the church with burial following in the adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Arts at St. John, C/O St. John Lutheran Church at the address above, or to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation at www.myasthenia.org.
