Mary G. Roddy

Mary (Gibbons) Roddy, 80, of Harleysville, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 16, 2019, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Martin Roddy, who passed away in 1985.

Born November 20, 1938, in Philadelphia, PA, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary Anne (McNulty) Gibbons. She was a 1956 graduate of Little Flower High School in Philadelphia, PA.

Mary was widowed at a young age, but she was a very strong woman who raised 8 children on her own. She sacrificed to make sure they all received an education.

Mrs. Roddy was a long-time member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. She volunteered at Church, at Corpus Christi School, and at Lansdale Catholic High School (bingo, lunch/yard mother, choir, Eucharistic minister, altar flowers, library, bookstore). After her retirement from Genuardi’s Supermarket, she was a Red Cross volunteer.

Mary was a devoted Phillies Phan. She was also an avid fan of her children’s many sports, and never missed a game. Mary loved to travel and visit family.

Mary was an avid reader; Harry Potter was her favorite series. She was rarely without a book. Mary was never idle; she crocheted many blankets while cheering on her children’s games. She had many creative talents. She loved to sew, knit, crochet, cross-stitch, paint birdhouses, bake, and cook. Mary loved to share her “famous” homemade Irish Soda Bread, accompanied by her Strawberry Jam. It was her most requested item to bring to parties and dinners.
Mary loved her children and grandchildren. She was “no-nonsense”, and had a strong work ethic. Mary was deeply admired and respected. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mary is survived by her children, Martin Roddy of Charlottesville, VA, Suzanne Roddy and her husband, Christopher Burgess, of Lago Vista, TX, Matthew Roddy and his wife, Brenda Cantwell, of Cedar Creek TX, Stephen Roddy of Harleysville, PA, Christine Leh and her husband, David, of Gilbertsville, PA, Mary Katherine Laird and her husband Daniel, of Cary, NC, Patrick Roddy and Jennifer Burkholder of Harleysville, PA, and James Roddy of Drexel Hill, PA; 2 brothers, Patrick Gibbons and Peter Gibbons; and 12 grandchildren: Sarah and Katie Roddy; Penelope, Kevin, Nolan, Jacinta, Dominic, Quinlan, and Raphael Laird; Elizabeth, David, and Maggie Leh.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, James Gibbons and Anna Carroll.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass which will begin promptly at 11 AM on Friday, November 22, 2019, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 900 Sumneytown Pike, Lansdale, PA 19446, where the family will receive friends for the viewing from 9:00 - 10:45 AM. Burial will follow at St. John Neumann Cemetery.
