Dr. David L. Heckman, Sr., 87, of Shannondell at Valley Forge in Audubon, PA since 2006, formerly of Havertown, PA, passed away December 4, 2018. He was the husband of Fern (Dietrich) Mathews Heckman and was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary (McCommons) Heckman, in 2007.
Born August 23, 1931, in Bloomsburg, PA, he was the son of the late William K. and Ruth (Zarr) Heckman, and was a graduate of Bloomsburg High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Bloomsburg State Teachers College, his master’s degree in science from Penn State University, and his doctorate in education from Temple University. He was also a veteran of the United States Army.
Dr. Heckman began his career in education teaching at Clifton Heights High School and then Haverford High School. He later became an assistant principal at Haverford High School and then assistant superintendent of The School District of Haverford Township. An avid tennis player, he was a past president of the Idlehour Tennis Club in Drexel Hill, PA. He was also a member of the masonic lodge and the Aronimink Swim Club of Drexel Hill.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, David L. Heckman, Jr. and his wife, Catherine, of Blue Bell, PA; a daughter, Lynda H. Jensen and her husband, David, of Coatesville, PA; three grandchildren, Jennifer Breslin and her husband, Sean, Jessica Chan and her husband, Philip, and Jonathan Heckman and his wife, Elizabeth; and three great grandchildren, Fiona, Brenna and Olivia.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 7PM on Monday, December 10, 2018, at R. L. Williams, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 3440 Skippack Pike at Cedars Rd., Skippack, PA, where friends may call for the viewing from 5-7PM. Burial will be private at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bloomsburg.
